How Vattakanal stole my heart?!

How Vatakannal stole my heart

When I told fellow travellers my plans to visit Kodaikanal on my next stop through Tamil Nadu, a few said “Whatever you do, you must stay in Vatakanal!” Following this advice was one of the best decisions I could have made, and through quick research and some recommendations, I reached out to Dani, the owner of Dostel.

Upon arrival at Dostel I was granted with some of the most spectacular views of the valley, and the Western Ghats, that I could have hoped for. The property is perched on a clearing of land just below the famous Atlafs cafe (serving delicious Middle eastern cuisine). The unspoiled panoramic views can be enjoyed right on the balcony of the dorms, or from mattresses laid up on the spacious rooftop above.

What struck me most upon arriving in Vatakanal was the romantic feel to the small hill top town. Each morning I would wake early to catch the slow ooze of morning sunlight spread like butter across the sky. Upon one such morning, a herd of bison came rambling below my viewing spot, with some gorgeous, fluffy calves in tow. There were lots of these little magical moments during my time in Vattakanal. The evenings were equally beautiful; often the sky would turn a soft lilac colour which would drape across the hazy mountains in the distance.

The hostel was very quiet when I was there (which only added to the charm), but neighbouring Atlaf’s cafe was always lively, attracting many Israeli backpackers in search of home comforts. I will admit, their falafel and tahini wraps are the best I have had in the Southern hemisphere, and it is the perfect afternoon destination for a hot chocolate or a cup of warm chai. I must also recommend Arasi’s for their famous avocado and egg dosas as a morning treat.

Aside from delicious food, I mainly came to the Vattakanal in search of hiking. I quickly found out that Dostel is conveniently located at the start of the popular Dolphin’s nose viewpoint trail. It is a short but worthwhile hike, and you can add on a couple of km by taking the first left on the return up the main path which takes a slower and easier hike back. One morning I rose early and walked along the road to the Guna caves and stopped off at the Pillar Rock viewpoint. If you get there before 9am then you can skip the queues and entrance fees! The viewpoint is impressive and beware the monkeys in Guna caves, be careful not to bring anything bright along with you!

Vattakanal is one of those towns perfect for some decompression, it is peaceful, beautiful and full of friendly people that make visiting an absolute delight.
